 Whispering Beauty

by

Nancy L. Dorner

“This is such boring country side”

They say disdainfully with a sneer of pride,

“Back home we have the mountainside,

the shore.”

And so they deride

the land they see

as if for beauty to exist at all

it must scream and shout

in vanity proclaiming

“Look at Me!

Look at Me!”

They’ve never learned

that Beauty too can whisper

and that by its very nature

the whisper and the sigh

are more appropriate to loveliness

than are the shriek and cry.
